These demonstrations and more are all described in this must-have book for any chemistry teacher. Compiled over several years by a chemistry instructor who believes that part of teaching excellence in science is bringing concepts to life in classroom demonstrations that students can see, hear, feel, and remember.
In this classic science demonstration, the air inside of a glass bottle is heated with a burning piece of cotton. The air inside the bottle expands due to the heat. When the fire goes out the air inside of the bottle cools, causing the volume to decrease (Charles Law). The reduction in volume translates into a lower pressure inside the bottle, resulting in the egg being pushed into it by the higher outside atmospheric pressure.
This video demonstration shows the reaction between carbon and potassium nitrate, a strong oxidizer. When carbon is added to melted potassium nitrate, it combusts as it dances around on the surface of the melted solution. Demonstrates combustion reactions, Redox reactions, thermodynamics, exothermic reactions. Video and Editing by Dr. Chris Schrempp
