These demonstrations and more are all described in this must-have book for any chemistry teacher. Compiled over several years by a chemistry instructor who believes that part of teaching excellence in science is bringing concepts to life in classroom demonstrations that students can see, hear, feel, and remember.
Bangs, Flashes, and Explosions
An old turntable, some wire screening, a dish containing a mixture of ethyl alcohol and saturated calcium acetate solution. and a match. Thats all thats needed to make a fiery tornado machine. The wire screen is rolled into a tube that fits over the turntable. When ethanol and saturated calcium acetate are added together, a Sterno-like gel is produced. Place the gel into a dish, sprinkle on some metal salts for colored flames, and ignite. With a flick of a switch the low-burning alcohol flame is transformed into a meter-high tornado! Illustrates science principles of combustion, flame tests with metal salts, fire storms, convection currents. Video and editing by Dr. Chris Schrempp
Tired of the typical old flame test? Want to see some quantum jumps and photonic frequencies in a new way? Try electrocuting a plump pickle. When a pickled cuke is attached to two electrodes you know its gotta be good. Just turn off the lights, and jack up the juice and the light show begins. This is a great way to view the yellow-orange glow of sodium in a new "light" Video and editing by Dr. Chris Schrempp
